Councillor resigns over turbines

A councillor has resigned his cabinet post after failing to declare an interest in a vote on a plan for five wind turbines in Suffolk.
Turkey producer Bernard Matthews’ proposal to build five turbines near Halesworth was rejected last week.
The application will have to be voted on again because Waveney council member Chris Punt, who led a vote to reject it, failed to declare an interest.
He lives in the parish where the wind turbines could be built.
He also works for a firm which may be affected by the plans.
‘Dreadful oversight’
The proposal for the five turbines at the Bernard Matthews premises at Holton was thrown out by six votes to four at a meeting of the development control committee on 21 October.
Mr Punt stepped in as a substitute on the committee at the last minute.
Council leader Mark Bee said: “I accept his explanation that his actions were a dreadful oversight rather than anything more wilful.”
Mr Punt has resigned as the council cabinet’s portfolio holder for finance.
The matter has been referred to the council watchdog Standards Board for England.
Mr Punt was unavailable for comment.
